A rare Przewalski’s foal has joined the herd at the Bronx Zoo.

The foal was born April 21, and can now be seen at the "Wild Asia Monorail" exhibit, the Wildlife Conservation Society said in a news release.

The zoo has played a long-running role in conserving Przewalski’s horses, also known as Mongolian wild horses, a species once considered extinct in the wild, according to the release.

Through coordinated breeding programs, zoo-born horses were reintroduced to their native grasslands in China in 1989 and in Mongolia starting in 1992, the release said.

Przewalski’s horses are currently classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with fewer than 2,000 estimated to remain worldwide, it added.

The stocky horses are known for their short legs, dun-colored coats and dark, upright manes that distinguish them from domestic breeds.

Visitors can view the foal during rides on the Wild Asia Monorail, which passes through habitats featuring red pandas, tigers and greater one-horned rhinos.
